He knew. Hudson knew who her family was. She hadnât even had time to process it before she pulled into her parking spot.
I protect the people I love. His words played on repeat. She would never be the one he protected. But then she remembered what heâd told her about her family. Had they really been looking for her? Why did he use the word kidnapped? Had Belle lied to Xavier?
Paloma was asleep in the back of the car. He was going to make her tell them. Or he might tell them himself. She texted him. Please talk to me first before saying anything to anyone.
His reply was short. Yes. Provided we talk tomorrow. What if what heâd told her was all for show and they hadnât really wanted to find her? Would they even care she was in town?
Hudson didnât know the real story. Her aunt had not taken her from them. Belle and Elijah had stuffed some clothes in her backpack and told her goodbye. Her father and brothers hadnât been there. Did they even know what had happened to her? Or had they been part of it?
Could she trust any of them? Her great-auntâs words bombarded her mind. The De La Rosa family is nothing but trouble.
Abigail closed her eyes and searched her memories. She recalled seeing her father at the funeral, and that sheâd been scared, but she couldnât remember why.
Then Belle had taken her to the room they shared and packed some of her clothes. She had been confused about what was going on. Afterward, Belle took her outside, where they had met Elijah. They each told her that it would be a short visit and that they would get her when things were settled. All sheâd understood was that her mom was gone and now her family were sending her away.
She had cried and begged to stay. She had asked for her father. But her motherâs aunt had pulled her off Elijah and put her into her car, then sped away. Abigail had twisted around in the seat belt and watched her cousins get smaller through the rear windshield. Where had her father and brothers been? Belle and Elijah had just stood there and let their great-aunt take her. That was the last time she had seen them or talked to them. Nothing since then. Had her cousins lied to the rest of her family?
With a sleeping Paloma tucked against her shoulder, she made her way upstairs to their cozy apartment. But it wasnât really theirs. How much longer would she be able to live off the charity of the Espinoza sisters? They had a business to run and their own families to take care of.
Tonight, sheâd put the final changes she wanted to make on their website, then show it to them. Hopefully, they would see how it would make the daily running of the bakery smoother.
Going over to the crib, she gently placed her daughter inside and gazed down at her.
